What is an eSIM?

It’s big bold and here to stay. Let’s learn about eSIMs.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the plastic SIM card you’ve probably used for years — but it’s built directly into your device. No physical card, no SIM tray, and definitely no poking around with a paperclip.

You simply download a mobile plan onto your device and you’re ready to go.

🔄 How is an eSIM different from a normal SIM?

Unlike a traditional SIM card, which you have to insert into your phone, an eSIM is built into the device. Think of it as a built in SIM card.

So with a built in eSIM in your device, you can just download an a mobile plan (an “eSIM profile”) from your mobile operator whenever you need one.

That means you can:

  • Switch between plans without swapping SIMs
  • Store multiple eSIM profiles on one device
  • Set up a plan in seconds, wherever you are in the world

A common scenario is that people still have a physical SIM for their mobile service at home but use an eSIM for travel (as travel eSIMs usually have better pricing for roaming abroad). Likewise you could have an eSIM for your home line and an eSIM for travel - both can be installed and active at the same time.

📲 Why use an eSIM?

  • Order and install plans instantly – no waiting around
  • Use one device for multiple plans – great for separating work and personal use
  • Travel-ready – perfect for business trips or holiday data
  • No tiny cards to lose or break – just tap and go

📶 What is DSDS?

DSDS stands for Dual SIM Dual Standby — and it’s a feature supported by many eSIM-enabled devices.

It means you can have two SIMs active at the same time — for example, one physical SIM and one eSIM, or even two eSIMs (depending on the device).

Perfect for:

  • Keeping work and personal numbers separate
  • Using a local SIM for data while keeping your home number available for calls and SMS
  • Switching between plans without swapping cards

Your phone will stay connected to both networks provided on each eSIM profile, and let you choose which one to use for calls, texts, or data — no rebooting or juggling SIM trays required.
